'Cruising Down the Nile'
(molto mysterioso) an elementary piano solo w/lyrics in exotic mid-eastern style produced by R.H. melody playing around upper tetrachord of Gm harmonic scale emphasizing the augmented second of Eb and F#, and the rhythm of African roots incorporating taks (downbeats), dums (upbeats) and rests to give a syncopated sound in L.H. accompaniment. The left hand plays broken open fifths establishing G tonality and the accompaniment depicts camels plodding steadily across the desert. In 4/4 meter. Makes a great introduction to Baroque ornaments because incorporated are mordents in R.H. melody (like the shake of a tambourine). The B section gets those little hands around none other than Bb minor 5-finger position with fingering worked out to accommodate small fingers. Descent of whole steps adds to the exoticness of the sound. Lyrics depict sights seen along the Nile mentioning hippos, camels, crocodiles and pyramids. GREAT IDEA for recital.

'Iguana'
(Noah's Ark Series) is from the rain forest of Costa Rica—a FUN tango naturally syncopated in the key of Dm. Form: intro AAB coda w/B section in subdominant key of Gm—VERY dramatic!! LH ostinato in typical tango style while RH carries melody in mostly single notes w/occasional additional harmony to ease the student into playing polyphony. Sassy tongue-in-cheek lyrics of a vegetarian iguana w/an attitude!. As w/all songs in this series, there are enough facts in the lyrics and on the back of the sheet music for the student to write a report for school. Think of the A+ and the interest of fellow classmates when the student carries his portable keyboard to school and performs this as part of his report—not to mention the pride and self-confidence the student develops! This piece invites (interactive) improvisational addition of percussive instruments such as maracas, castanets, rain sticks, drums, etc. and is easy to dance to being in Latin rhythm. For electric keyboard use a latin rhythm accomp. with pan pipes voicing.(On 'American Eagle' CD

'Joey the Wallabee Kangaroo'
'Noah's Ark Series'. The song style is a waltz, which depicts European influence in Australia. ‘Joey’ is in the key of F and form is: intro ABA coda. B section is in Dm (relative minor). My plan is for the jumping mother to represent the first beat of each measure (strong beat) and the arc of her jump represents entire measure. Very playful. LH plays typical waltz accomp. while RH melody tells of a shy baby kangaroo that does NOT want to leave the safety of Mom’s pouch—has a surprise coda. Uses accelerando and ritardando and also introduces augmented chords. (on 'American Eagle' CD)

‘Koala Lullaby’ (‘Kirian’s Lullaby’) written for my grandson when he was a baby-- is a lullaby—appropriate for the koala, the animal that sleeps the most on the planet Alberti bass is used in LH. Both hands in treble clef throughout plus soft pedal gives it a music box effect. In ABA form, G major. (on 'American Eagle' CD)

'Dinosaur Collection'
'Dinosaur Collection' is a group of 4 character pieces in piano solo format. Late Elementary.('Steggosaurus' chosen by NCMTA list Jr. 3A in 1998 and 2004)
‘Steggosaurus’ is taking a playful romp thru the pre-historic forest. Features lots of syncopation—in ABA form w/melody in RH on A section and LH on B section. B section very Latin sounding, like he is doing a little dance. Key of Cm going to sub-dominant (Fm) in B. In 4/4 meter.
(all audio clips are below dinosaur descriptions)
'BRONTOSAURUS'
‘Bronte’ is lumbering along in 4/4 meter in key of C w/tonal explorations into Gb and Eb minors. Mostly in echoing open fifths w/melody divided. In ABAcoda form—at the coda, according to one of my students, he has to make a mad dash for the water because Tyrannosaurs wants a bite of him. He dives into the water to escape expressed by a HUGE descending glissando.
'TYRANNASAURUS REX'
Intro an appropriate fanfare to announce king of all dinosaurs (at time it was composed) on a hungry, terrifying, prowling march. In Cm, 4/4 meter—while LH is performing staccato march accomp., RH has melody in Cm 5-finger position. A2 transfers to Fm and placement of the hands just transfer. What fun the B section is w/hands performing open fifts beginning in middle of piano and s-t-e-t-c-h-i-n-g out to the ‘outer limits’ of the piano in opposite directions using damper pedal and LOTS of dynamic shading!! (see score excerpt p. 6)-
'PTERANODON'
This haunting, lyrical piece is in a Romantic rubato style—both hands in treble with RH playing melody in Em while LH broken chords’ bass notes descend chromatically, producing a very dramatic sound. Lots of artistry and expression learned here. ABA again w/B section soaring arpeggios depicting flight. Used this melody in my “American Eagle’ song of 9/11. (see score excerpt p 6)

'Sea Zoo Coloring Book'
Employing the artistic skills of Kim Dills and Catherine Broadhead a coloring book with lyrics of the sea zoo pieces was created. Many teachers in various schools have used this book along with the CD or cassette including these songs when teaching lessons and units on oceans. Permission is granted to the teachers to run off as many copies of the coloring pages as are needed for his/her class. Having observed closely the students Lynne has taught, she noticed not only was it fun to color and sing at the same time, as she had enjoyed doing as a little girl, but that incorporating visual and performing arts facilitated and reinforced learning. This is also called cross disciplines, or integrating disciplines in education
'Sea Zoo' cassette
This cassette contains all 10 of the 'Sea Zoo' pieces. Vocals are by Jill Benson Williamson. Goes with the sheet music published by Alfred and with the Sea Zoo coloring book.
